Design Challenge
My contributions to the project started with laying out the initial designs and building plan with feedback from my teammates. Then, as we moved into the construction stage, I thought it would be beneficial to the project to have a 3D model to reference and update as we progressed, so I learned some of the basics of Fusion to create one. Then, while referencing our model, I helped my team choose, cut, and assemble all of the wood pieces for the chair.
In the end, I was very pleased with our finished product. Our chair supported our professor, Dr. Sanchez, with ease, and then withstood the 600lb stress test with that same ease. Additionally, we maintained one of the best strength-to-cost ratios in the entire class. Both the end result of this project and the knowledge I gained from it are what make me proud of my Timber Chair.
This project, along with the other "Design Challenge" projects, was an assignment for my Foundations Engineering Design class. For this timber chair assignment, the objective was to design and construct a chair using lumber, composite wood products, and fasteners to maximize strength while minimizing material usage and cost. Through completing this project, I learned skills in design iteration, constraint engineering, project planning, safe power tool usage, and 3D modelling.
